The gift, presented Thursday during an annual event at the Hyatt Regency La Jolla at Aventine, is meant to support ongoing programs and services at the hospital. Sharp Mary Birch handles about 9,000 deliveries per year, making it by far the largest maternity facility in the region.
In honor of the donation, which is part of a larger $12 million fundraising campaign by the Sharp HealthCare network, Sharp will rename Mary Birch’s delivery center the “Papa Doug and Geniya Manchester Family Labor and Delivery Unit.”
Doug Manchester is a well-known real estate developer and former owner of The San Diego Union-Tribune. The beneficiaries of his philanthropy over the years have included his alma mater, San Diego State University, the maternity wing at Scripps Memorial Hospital La Jolla and The Bishop’s School.
